Import goals with Smart Import

Bring goals in from any IEP system by pasting, uploading a screenshot, or uploading a spreadsheet.

Smart Import reads goal text from wherever your IEPs live (Frontline, IEP Direct or anything else) and sorts each goal into area, criteria, period, method and schedule. You review everything before it’s saved.

Open the Import page. You’ll see three options.

Option 1: Paste goals

  1. Choose Paste Goals.
  2. Copy the goal text from your IEP system and paste it in. It starts processing immediately.
  3. Don’t include the student’s name. You’ll choose the student in the next step.

Option 2: Upload a screenshot

  1. Choose Upload Screenshot.
  2. Drop one or more screenshots of the goals page, or click Browse Files.

Option 3: Upload a spreadsheet

  1. Choose Upload Spreadsheet.
  2. Drop a .xlsx, .xls or .csv file with one goal per row. Not sure of the format? Click Download the template.

The spreadsheet needs these columns, in any order:

ColumnWhat goes in it
Student Last NameMatches the goal to a student
Student First NameMatches the goal to a student
Areae.g. Reading, Math, Speech
Student GoalThe full goal text
Goal Criteriae.g. 80% accuracy
Goal Criteria Periode.g. 4 of 5 trials
Goal ProcedureHow data is collected
Goal ScheduleHow often progress is checked
Goal ResponsibilityWho collects the data

Review and save

Extraction usually takes 10 to 30 seconds. Then each goal appears in a review queue marked Ready to Use, Needs Review or Incomplete.

  1. Pick the student for each goal, or use Assign all goals to for a whole batch.
  2. Fix anything marked Needs fixing. You can edit the area, schedule, annual goal, criteria, criteria period, evaluation method and short-term objectives.
  3. Skip anything you don’t want (and Undo if you change your mind).
  4. When you see Import complete, click View Students, or Import More.

Using IEP Direct? Save a reusable listing

IEP Direct can export every goal in exactly the spreadsheet format above, and you only have to set it up once.

  1. In IEP Direct, open the Listing tab and click Create New. Name it Datability Web.
  2. Move these nine fields into Selected Fields: Student Last Name, Student First Name, Area, Student Goal, Goal Criteria, Goal Criteria Period, Goal Procedure, Goal Schedule, Goal Responsibility.
  3. Set the prompt for the current school year, choose your students (or leave all unselected for everyone), and click Process.
  4. Save the output as an XLS file, then upload it with Upload Spreadsheet.

Next school year, just process the same listing again.
